THIS WEEK IN 1974: Army entertainers laugh together again

Comedian Ken Platt, who was at the Kings Theatre, had a nostalgic reunion with a Portsmouth man, who was with him in a concert party in north Africa 30 years previously.

Mr Platt, from Lancashire, and Bill Moreton, of Fawcett Road, Southsea, spent almost a year together at an army convalescent depot at Sidi Ferruch, Algiers, in 1944. 

'˜When I got to the camp, I joined a concert party called the Forest Murmurs,' said Ken.

'˜Bill spent ten months with us and we did a new show each week, writing our own script and giving performances to units all over the place.'

Mr Moreton, who was a tank driver in the Royal Artillery, was the concert's pianist.

He said: '˜Despite the war, we had a great time with the concert party and I enjoyed it so much.'
