THIS WEEK IN 1974: Plans take off for a new mini-airport

Plans for a mini-aerodrome and a variety of other developments on the site of the disused Portsmouth City Airport had been submitted to Portsmouth City Council for outline planning consent.Â

Two concrete runways, with facilities for an air terminal, limited scheduled services, general aviation and flying training were proposed.

The plans had been proposed by the Portsmouth City Airport Users' Association. They claimed the plans would not be a change of use to the existing city development plan.

Mr Bickers, the association's secretary, said: '˜This would provide the city council with the best of both worlds.

'˜It is a long-term plan and we would be prepared to co-operate with the city council on details.

'˜At present, it's lying idle.'

However, these plans did not take off. 

The area was eventually redeveloped for housing and industry, which Anchorage Park now occupies. Portsmouth Aviation Association still have a facility at the site and the road running alongside the former airport is still named Airport Service Road.
