Abigail Harfield had not yet learned her own telephone number '“ but the three-year-old knew exactly which three digits to dial in an emergency.

When her mum Lyn fell down the stairs at their Portsmouth home, she simply dialled 999 and told the operator: '˜My mummy won't wake up'.

She gave her home address and within minutes an ambulance crew arrived.

Although she was not seriously hurt as a result of the fall brought on by flu, Mrs Harfield was proud of her daughter.

As a reward for her quick thinking, the ambulance crew gave Abigail £1.

She also received a Hampshire Ambulance Service bravery certificate for her actions.

The service only presented about six certificates a year.
