It was a fitting occasion with 485 runners finishing and the Gosport club providing all the volunteers for the 5k run on Saturday.

They also had pacers to help runners chasing a new personal best, or looking to get inside a particular time.

A huge number of yellow Gosport vests were on show for the run, along with big turnouts of other club runners, including those from Stubbington Green, Fareham Crusaders, Portsmouth Joggers and City of Portsmouth.

Cowling, who sadly died last week at the age of 54 after a battle with cancer, was a big parkrun supporter and loved the inclusive nature of the events.

He played a key part in helping to get Lee-on-the-Solent parkrun started.

They held their first event on Saturday, July 4, 2015 – and now they have reached run number 45.

Saturday’s total of 485 runners was a new record for Lee-on-the-Solent and it included 87 first timers, with 133 new personal best times set.

It was an amazing occasion and will always be remembered by everyone as the community came together to pay respects to a Gosport running hero.
