THIS YEAR IN 1979: Young anglers fall victims of the weather

Have your say

JOE ARCH etched his name into the record books as he took round five of the Individual Sea Angling Club’s Solent League in Gosport.

From peg 34 in zone B, Arch reeled in three dogfish, two pouting, a thornback ray of 2lb 10oz and a 79cm smoothhound of 3lb 12oz.

The overall weight of his haul was 12lb 1oz 12dm.

It was Arch’s ninth ISAC individual match victory – a new record number of wins.

As a result of his success, he landed the top cash prize of £130, with the ISAC round five match winner’s trophy and certificate.

The league contest was fished at Browndown Beach, from 7pm until midnight.

Nearly 100 pegs were laid out in three zones, from the picket fence on Browndown to the entrance to the main seafront car park at Lee.

The event was fished in good conditions, with 72 anglers booking in for the battle.

It was calm and dry through the evening but the main catches were made in the final two hours of the match, as the fish kept the anglers waiting.

Runner-up in the competition was zone A winner Darren Stevens, from peg 27, placed just past the concrete mushroom on Browndown.

His haul included four pouting, one dogfish and one whiting.

And his 102cm smoothhound, of 8lb 12oz, was the heaviest fish of the match.

Stevens’ zone-winning weight was 11lb 8oz 4dm.

Third place in the match went to Darren Cramer, fishing from peg 75 placed opposite the Old Ship Inn.

A total of 194 fish were recorded at the scales for a total weight of 187lb 15oz.

Sizeable fish included black bream, flounder, dogfish, tub gurnard, plaice, pouting, a thornback ray, smoothhound – measured and returned – and whiting.

Peter Roberts, of Portsmouth, reeled in the best black bream of 1lb 12dm.

And Justin Roulland landed the best dogfish at 2lb.
