THIS YEAR IN 1979: Young anglers fall victims of the weather

Have your say

MARATHON men John and Joe Parkes fished a 24-hour session at Funtley Lake in Fareham recently.

The father-and-son duo tackled the Portsmouth & District Angling Club-controlled venue, which is fast becoming their favourite spot.

The Parkes men have landed some fine specimen carp over the past few weeks.

And while their latest session started slowly, a switch in tactics reaped rewards.

They upped gear and moved pegs, placing their bait on the gravel bars the lake holds in the deeper areas.

And very soon John was connected to a wonderful 22lb common carp.

He said: ‘It was an epic battle that took almost 10 minutes to finally subdue the powerful fish.’

Young Joe then netted a 5lb 2oz tench. But the excitement was not over. At 7am the next morning, the pair had another very fast take which saw yet another big carp hooked but this one, unfortunately, threw the hook. All the fish were caught on home-made boilies they prepare with a secret recipe that has been really working well wherever they go.

And the Parkes are proof that catching consistently on your own bait makes each fish all the more special.
