THIS YEAR IN 1979: Young anglers fall victims of the weather

Have your say

Angling club members in and around Portsmouth have been busy making the most of the recent fine weather and favourable tide to land some mighty specimens – along with one or two more rare visitors to our part of the coast.

At a recent harbour competition, Stamshaw Lake AC member John Goulty hooked into, not one, but two very unusual species of trigger fish.

These would normally be found in the Mediterranean but are becoming more frequent visitors over the past few seasons.

But as they are a reef species, landing them in the confines of the harbour is a very rare feat.

There was another Stamshaw member who was all smiles after landing his personal best dover sole, also in Portsmouth harbour.

Gareth Larvin, who is the club’s fishing officer, was fishing from his dingy in Fareham Creek when the 23-year-old hooked into his specimen-size sole of 2lb 13oz, using ragworm on a flowing trace.

n The Angling Trust Marine Competition Group are organising junior/youth England trials along the Milford Shingle Bank this Saturday, September 1, where a host of top international anglers will be on hand to offer tips and advice.

While the whole of the England junior/youth teams will be present, the event is also open to any aspiring youngsters who fancy showing their mettle.

Just bring your fishing equipment along with some ragworm and a mackerel to take part.

The event will be fished to the measure-and-return system.

The meeting point will be 10am at the Cut Bridge, located at New Lane, which runs behind the bank.

Fishing is expected to take place from around 11.30pm to 3.30pm.

n In coarse angling, MBK Leisures got together with East Hampshire District Council and held a Getactiv8d introduction to fishing/teaching day for 30 children who had either never fished before or had little experience.

All the children, parents and coaches had a great day, with roach, rudd, perch, skimmers, tench and carp being caught, before being returned to the water.

All tackle, bait and tuition was supplied by MBK.
