THIS YEAR IN 1979: Young anglers fall victims of the weather

Have your say

IAN GIBBS caught out his rivals with a top effort to land victory in the Royal Navy species competition.

Royal Navy Officer Gibbs, from Pagham, was all smiles after reeling in his fine specimen bass of 7lb 8oz.

And he claimed victory in the two-day royal naval species competition, aboard Portsmouth based charter boat JO – DAN, skippered by Phill Hunt.

The group of 10 contestants battled it out in glorious summer weather, landing some nice sized smoothhounds and small eyed rays along with specimen blonde rays, thornbacks, red gurnard and plenty more.

On another Charter trip out of Portsmouth Harbour, youngster Del Boy had a real fight on his hands to land his first ever smoothhound.

The Portsmouth lad caught a whopper while out fishing with his dad and a group of Cosham Trade Club anglers, aboard Rob Hickins Charter boat Sea-Juicer.

The youngster’s fish took a whole squid presented on flowing trace with a 2//0 hook while fishing a mark east of the Nab Tower and was returned to the sea unharmed.
