THIS YEAR IN 1979: Young anglers fall victims of the weather

Have your say

JOHN ROGERS celebrated his recent wedding with a maiden match victory in round seven of the Southern Premier League.

Fished at Bracklesham Bay, near Chichester, the Portsmouth angler won the competition from peg 16 in zone A with a total weight of 4lb 12oz.

That bag was represented by the heaviest fish of the match – a bass of 4lb 11oz 8dm – and a ray.

The victory handed Rogers the top cash prize of £135, as well as the winner’s trophy and certificate.

Runner-up was zone B winner Allan Jones, from Poole, who from peg 56, landed two bass of 2lb and 1lb 5oz, along with a silver eel, for a total weight of 4lb 4oz 8dm.

Jones’ zone victory earned him a cash prize of £100.

The third-placed angler in the match was Rob Clarke, who reeled in a single bass of 4lb 1oz 8dm, from peg 54 in zone B.

This was his second big bass in consecutive matches, having landed a 5lb 7oz prize in the last match at Browndown.

Clarke said he was overdue some luck!

The traditional mid-summer venue at Bracklesham saw fishing from 8pm until 1am.

Just like their past few matches, the English weather let the anglers down again, with a force five-six south-westerly blowing right into the faces of the 47 entrants who turned up for the challenge.

The target species of smoothhound failed to appear in the rough conditions so attentions were turned to bass and pout.

The match was fished in two zones from the Sussex Beach Holiday Village towards the pipe at Selsey.

Thankfully, it didn’t rain during the contest and 68 fish were recorded at the scales by 27 entrants for a total weight of 35lb 8oz.

That was represented by 10 bass, 35 pout, two silver eel and one sole.

Rob Marshall from Taunton, Somerset is the top match angler on the English circuit today.

And he retained his lead at the top of the Southern Premier League by finishing 11th in round seven, having recorded two pout, one sole and two top-up rays from peg 43 in zone B.

Marshall leads the individual championship on 28 points and 18lb 1oz 4dm, having collected £545 in prize money along the way so far this season.

Round eight is at Hillhead, Fareham on Saturday, August 27 (8pm-1am).
