England international and 2009 Southern Premier League champion Darren Newland held off a strong challenge from Fareham’s Danny Mogridge and Gosport’s Nick Pateman to net top spot in round 10 of this year’s SPL competition.
Fishing from peg 25 in zone A of the event at Southbourne Beach, Bournemouth, he landed one bass of 1lb 8oz 4dm – the heaviest fish of the match – along with one garfish and two top-up rays for a match-winning total weight of 1lb 15oz 12dm.
It was Newland’s third match victory at the venue, having won there the previous two seasons.
Runner-up in the competition was Mogridge, who won zone B from peg 59 with a flounder, garfish and top-up sole for a total weight of 1lb 2oz 4dm. This earned him the zone’s top cash prize of £100.
Pateman finished in third place overall, having landed a single bass of 1lb 4oz from peg two in zone A for a £80 cash prize.
Forty-nine anglers booked in for the match, which was fished in calm and clear conditions with a slight easterly breeze throughout the evening.
Sixty pegs were laid out in two zones from the end of the promenade.
A total of 62 fish were recorded at the scales by 33 entrants for a disappointing weight of 14lb 6oz – the lowest of the season – represented by three bass, two dab, two flounder, seven garfish, two scad and seven sole.
A total of £635 in 12 cash awards was paid out on the night, raising the total for the year to £7,750.
Steve Harder stretched his lead at the top of the overall individual championship table to 23 points and is now on 43 overall with 25lb 12ozs 8dm in weight.
Mike Brown moved up one place to second overall on 66 points and 18lb 7oz 8dm in weight.
Mogridge moved up seven places and now lies third overall on 71 points with 21lb 1oz in weight.
