THIS YEAR IN 1979: Young anglers fall victims of the weather

Have your say

Young angler Adam Dummer’s smart display was rewarded as he claimed glory in the under-nines category at the latest MBK Leisures Junior Open.

Dummer recorded an impressive total weight of 25lb to light up the Coloured Ponds venue in Rake and seal narrow victory ahead of Petersfield’s Barney Eastman (23-8-0) and Tobias Sanders, from Clanfield, (12-8-0).

Elsewhere, Karter Whittock again underlined his prodigious talent by claiming top honours in the nine to 12-years category.

Whittock fished margins on corn over pellet, posting an unchallenged score of 51-13-0 ahead of Southsea’s Carey Standen (33-6-0) and Jessica Carter 12-0-0.

And in a closely-fought 13 to 16-years category, it was Alfie Peachan of Portsmouth who showed excellent composure to edge out James Bonnett of Waterlooville.

Peachan’s 20-14-0 overcame Bonnett’s 19-0-0, with Cameron Thorn finishing in third place with 11-0-0.

The next MBK Junior Open match will take place on Saturday, with special guest Sarah Collins from Get Hooked On Fishing in attendance.

All juniors are welcome to the event which will take place from 1pm-4pm following a draw at midday.

n Angler Bill Johns made a splash catching his first-ever undulate ray, while fishing a species hunt competition in the Solent.

Johns reeled in a 17lb 12oz cracker while on board Rob Hickin’s charter boat Sea-Juicer.

The ray took a squid bait in shallow water.

Johns endured a struggle to land the prize specimen, which was among 11 different species boated throughout the day, including conger undulates, thornbacks, spotted ray, smoothhounds and tope.

Tackle can be borrowed by prior arrangement.
