This year’s BUPA Great South Run weekend kicks off tomorrow with a new baby brother introduced to the festivities.

Ahead of Sunday’s 10-mile tear-up around the streets of Portsmouth, a brand new 5k race will join the regular mini and junior events, starting at 10am tomorrow.

While it’s more of an appetiser for Sunday’s main course, close to 1,000 runners of all abilities have signed up and will cross the same finish line as the main race.

And for those who are getting their first taste of the Great South Run, all entrants will receive a guaranteed opportunity to take part in the 2012 10-mile race.

Double Great South Run champion – Ireland’s Sonia O’Sullivan – will be joining the participants, with plenty of fun activities to try at the event village on Castle Field.

Football, mini-golf, street dance, a sprint track, climbing wall, inflatable assault course and a circus acts workshop will all be on hand.

Don’t miss The News tomorrow for all the build-up to the big race.
