City of Portsmouth will have to dig deep for their second round of UK Women’s Athletics League action.

A number of City’s powerful senior members will be missing from the trip to Stevenage on Sunday.

The likes of Cassie Thorp, Jess Chen and Karrie Blake are all out for Bronwin Carter’s side.

Chen is undertaking a busy period of exams at university, Blake is feeling her way back from injury and Thorp has a prior engagement.

City are looking to build on a promising opening to the campaign on home soil last month.

They finished second in that fixture – nine points behind winners Herne Hill Harriers.

City picked up 175 points on that occasion to leave them handily placed in the table with two outings to go.

Katy Watts and Thorp were A string winners for their side.

And the likes of Jessica Shuttleworth, Mandy Gault and Emma Gilmore supplemented those efforts with second-placed finishes.

They currently sit in front of Crawley with Marshall Milton Keynes in fourth.

Despite being without leading team members this time around, City can take heart from the grit they showed at the Mountbatten Centre last time out.

They were without Blake and Chen on that occasion with Chloe Campbell also missing.

The good news for City is Blake is close to a return to action.

And both Chen and Thorp are expected to be in their team’s ranks for their next outing.

Blake is earmarked for a race in the Saucony Grand Prix meet in Basingstoke on July 18.

Her coach Gerry North is looking forward to seeing her make up for lost time.

North said: ‘Karrie can’t wait to get back out there again.’
