BRAVE Mandy Gault put her Commonwealth Games heartache behind her to claim South of England Championship gold.

The City of Portsmouth flier had been expected to form part of Northern Ireland’s squad for next month’s Games in Glasgow.

But the 400m hurdler was surprisingly omitted from the Irish line-up – and forced to evaluate her plans for the season.

The prestigious South of Englands at Crystal Palace provided the perfect opportunity to ease those disappointments.

And Gault, who won the Sussex 400m Championships last month, secured a timely boost by winning her heat (60.21 sec) and then the final (59.82) in the capital.

‘It’s pleasing to win my first South of England title – especially coming so soon after my Commonwealth Games disappointment,’ said Gault.

‘That still hurts but I’m doubly determined to prove the selectors wrong.’
