It is a popular, friendly, community event and the support from the marshals is always a big boost for the runners as they tackle the Stokes Bay course.

Organiser Nick Carter thanked everyone for taking part and he is already looking forward to next year.

He said: '˜The Gosport 5K Summer Series finale didn't disappoint. A good turnout despite the overcast conditions and stiff coastal breeze saw Chichester runner James Baker take the win with an impressive 16min 05sec while Rachael Phelps ran a super time of 18.53 to win the ladies' race.

'˜Supported by ON Running and Alton Sports, the field of mixed ages and abilities were superbly marshalled by Gosport Road Runners and it was a delight to see the series finish on a high with many runners pleased with their progress over the five races.

'˜On behalf of the race managers at Nice Work and all involved in making this happen, thanks to everyone who took part and we invite them back for even more fun next year.

'˜An early post race review has seen the decision to bring next year's series forward so it starts on Tuesday, April 9 and is on every second Tuesday of the month, concluding in August not September.

'˜This will allow runners to finish in daylight and also not have to worry about getting their young ones home early for school the following morning.'
