Andy Vernon returned to Portsmouth to support Go Run for Fun at the Mountbatten Centre.

The double 2014 European Championships medallist was back in the city to help encourage hundreds of youngsters from local schools take part in a campaign which aims to get children off the sofa and running.

Vernon said: ‘It’s really good to get kids active. It’s happening in all sports.

‘I would have loved this when I was a kid. I was quite a competitive child. Obviously I still am very competitive now.‘

It was a great occasion, especially when Jessica Alderson, 8, from Mill Hill Primary School, Waterlooville, finished the mile-long course to become runner number 40,000 since Go Run for Fun started in 2013.
