Waverley’s rising-star, Louis McCubbin, has been selected to attend the Bowls England junior international squad day on July 5.

It is a good boost for the talented youngster.

In the County Club competition, Portsmouth League division two side Copnor forgot their league problems to defeat division one side Waterlooville by five shots at Swordsands.

Dave Powe’s 13-shot win over John Faithful was crucial.

Division two outfit Cowplain shocked division one side Vospers by 32 shots.

Copnor and Cowplain will meet at Swordsands for the right to progress to the area final.

The top two in division were drawn together and Waverley beat Alexandra by eight shots.

Waverley will face Milton Park in the area semi-final after Milton beat Fareham by four shots.

In the Rowland Cup, Gas Social saw their run ended by a home defeat at the hands of Star & Crescent.

There were no real shocks in the other games, while there is a possibility of an inter-club battle between the two Alexandra teams in the semi-finals.

In division one, Waverley became the latest side to fall foul of Waterlooville’s carpet.

The six-shot win for Waverley’s rink of Gary Starks was matched by Ville’s Cyril Hilton.

Joe Slatter recorded a one shot win for the hosts.

Then it was all down to the final bowls of Matt Marchant and Dave Baxter, with the former two up for Waterlooville.

With his final bowl, Marchant trailed the jack to leave Waverley lying six shots.

Baxter’s response took a fortunate deflection to end up second wood, thus winning his match by one shot and securing victory.

Alexandra crushed Milton Park by 41 shots, scoring more than 100, on their home green.

Marty Wake and Don Lilley were on top form for the title-chasing hosts.

Division two leaders Gosport recorded a seven-shot away win at Portsmouth Water.

Cowplain fell to a 21-shot away defeat at Star & Crescent.

Leaders Hayling recorded 14-shot success over Gas in division three.

Dave John’s 11-shot win was key to the victory.
