Ben Bendle fired a warning to his JABA National Championship rivals ahead of this weekend’s southern semi-finals at the Charter Sports Centre in Portsmouth.

The class five, 75kg Heart of Portsmouth (HOP) boxer, nicknamed The Bull, brushed aside the highly-regarded London middleweight champion Jason Maughan at Feltham College last weekend.

Unfortunately, Bendle’s club-mate Tom Johnson did not make it through.

He went down in a tight encounter with the experienced Zak Chelli of Dale Youth.

Regardless, HOP boss Q Shillingford was delighted

‘The championships are very tough,’ he added.

‘Tom has only been with the club four months but what he has achieved already is astronomical. He is one for the future.

‘Ben is firing on all cylinders. His preparation has been spot on. He listens to his coaches and acts on their advice.’

Boxing takes place both tomorrow and Sunday at the Charter Sports Centre.

The action starts at 12.30pm each day, with tickets £10 and £5 for under-16s.
