‘But we’ve managed to sell out the Mountbatten Centre again with extra tables and tiered seats.

‘This year there is a strong Gosport contingent.

‘I think they just went there to train with my brother Lee, and, all of a sudden there are eight or nine players I’ve played football with getting involved.

‘They’ve helped in the past with charity events, but have got the bug for it and ended up being roped in.

‘They have loved the atmosphere of the gym and really mixed in.

‘Most of them haven’t had a drink since the new year.

‘All of the group has become so solid and strong.

‘Now they’ve stuck it out and are stepping into the ring tomorrow night. It’s been brilliant.’

Pompey kitman – and Commonwealth Games boxer – Kev McCormack has been lending his support and experience to the boxers as they ready themselves for action.
