Ebonie Jones’ defence of her European Championship crown came to to a close at the semi-final stage today.

Heart of Portsmouth’s reigning champion went down to a nip-and-tuck points loss to world title holder Anush Grigoryan at the Junior and Youth Women’s European Championships.

Jones saw her rival get the verdict at 51kg in the youth category, despite England coaches ringside feeling she had done enough to win.

And that followed a defeat for team-mate Ivy-Jane Smith, who drew plaudits for her efforts as Russian Valeria Rodionova was given the verdict at 52kg in the junior section.

Their progess to the semi-final stage mean both boxers return from Hungary with a bronze medal.
