Robbie Matthews bids for a semi-final slot in the ABAs tomorrow.

Matthews aims to get within a single victory of a national final when he meets Eastern Counties champion David Leo in Great Yarmouth.

The Heart of Portsmouth talent was give a bye in the pre-quarter-finals last week when his opponent pulled out because of illness.

Matthews has every reason to be confident after showing some flying form so far to get to this stage.

The 60kg talent defeated national champion Jimmy Cooper to make it to the Southern Counties final.

He then followed that up with an impressive stoppage of Waterside’s Jimmy Cooper at Portsmouth Guildhall.

Matthews is not the only HOP boxer in action as five young talents from the club start on the road to junior ABA glory.

Josh Pritchard (50kg), Harley Hodgetts (57kg), Michael Ballingall (63kg), Sam Ellwood (67kg) and Mateusz Ziolkowski (81kg) will all be looking to become Southern Counties champions and progress.

Meanwhile, Royal Navy past and present will come together under one roof in May. The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Ex-Boxers’ Association are holding a dinner show at South Parade Pier on Friday, May 13.

That will see the navy taken on a Southern Counties select side, which is sure to deliver some quality contests.

Some big names from the navy’s past are set to be present with the likes of former world champion Terry Marsh and ex-favourite Wayne Green flying in from the Caribbean.

And former world heavyweight champ Tim Witherspoon could be in the country to lend his support.

The event focuses on raising money for charity – with two ex-Navy boxers, Gordon McBride and Tony Westwood suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.

Tables of 10 are still available at £40 per seat. For details, contact Alan Dolman on (023) 9248 3388.
