Southern Counties success is the aim as the road to senior ABA success gathers pace.

A host of the area’s top boxers are in action in Ramsgate as they aim to make an impression in the competition.

The preliminary rounds are staged today, with the finals taking place next weekend.

Heart of Portsmouth and Leigh Park both feature significantly in Kent.

Intriguingly, a boxer from each outfit will face off as HOP’s Robbie Matthews goes in against Leigh Park talent Shane Govan at 60kg.

Matthews made a big impression in the ABAs last year on his way to reaching the semi-finals.

He will be out for a similar run this time around but faces a tricky test against Govan, who reached the novice finals last year.

The 19-year-old is now ready to step it up, while Garry Neale returns at 63.5kg after a three-year lay-off.

Neale has put holidays aside to focus his efforts on readying himself for the Southern Counties Championships.

Portsmouth fight favourite Tony Oakey has been putting his time and efforts into the Leigh Park outfit and helping the pair get ready for action.

Meanwhile, Ryan Colquhoun’s campaign begins in a competitive 81kg division.

And novice champion and News Sports Awards sportsman of the year runner-up Greg Bridet is gearing up for his campaign to begin at 91kg.
