Waterlooville star aiming for world title glory

Waterlooville ace Mark Chamberlain has linked up with Frank Warren in the pro ranks

The Waterlooville ace is out to prove he has what it takes to reach the pinnacle of his sport after signing a five-fight promotional deal with Frank Warren.

Chamberlain is pencilled in to make his debut in December in London afterÂ building a hugely-impressive amateur pedigree.

The former Team Wiseman amateur picked up three national titles at junior, youth and senior level.

The 19-year-old rewrote the record books in April when he became the first senior boxer to win an elite title while with a local club for 20 years, following in the footsteps of Tony Oakey and Jamie Evans.

Now the England international has big ambitions as he looks to make his mark in the boxing big leagues, after linking up with Southampton trainer Wayne Batten.

Chamberlain said: '˜I want to go all the way to the top. That's my aim.

'˜I want to do Portsmouth proud and really get the boxing name going for the city again.

'˜Tony Oakey was one of the last people from the area to win the title I've just won as an amateur.

'˜I've now done the same and want to go to the top. Fingers crossed I can do it.

'˜I'm boxing early December at the Copper Box in London.'˜I've gone with Wayne Batten as my trainer.

'˜He had the contacts and I've ended up signing a five-fight promotional deal with Frank Warren.

'˜I want to get get out at the end of the year and then stay active.

'˜I'll take it as it comes, but I believe I can make it and become world champion one day.

'˜I'm not in a hurry, though. I know I've got a lot to learn and I've got to start at the bottom and work myself up.'

Chamberlain was heartened by a promoter of Warren's standing being keen to recruit him to his stable.

And with a decent prospects ahead and strong local backingÂ the 42-5 amateur is confident he'll have a groundswell of support behind him on his professional journey.

The hope for Chamberlain is he'll be able to give up his job as a plasterer and concentrate full-time on fulfilling his boxing ambitions.

He added: '˜Frank was over the moon with me. He didn't hesitate to give me the deal.

'˜He said he'd heard good things and it was easy to do the deal. I shook his hand and it was done.

'˜My family are all pleasedÂ and excited. They know it's what I want to do.

'˜I want to go full-time, so hopefully I can find a sponsor who can get behind me.

'˜I've got loads of support from friends and family. They are all right behind me.'
