Davies in a hurry as Portsmouth & Southsea defeat Hayling Island in Hampshire District League

Jack Davies thumped a rapid half-century as Portsmouth & Southsea 2nds claimed their opening Hampshire District League win.

He hammered seven fours and four sixes in a 48-ball 74 as P & S rattled up 252 off 37.3 overs of their County Group E encounter against Hayling Island at St James.

The hosts had been 21-2 after Jonah Gillam (2-63) had dismissed openers Steve Clements (5) and Shaun Briggs (9).

Davies dominated a third wicket stand of 115 with Sayeed Shahid (43) before he was bowled by Greg Chaplin.

Wicket-keeper Dean Lee clubbed 37 off 20 balls to help set Hayling a tough target.

Mike Hallett was the most successful bowler with 3-34.

Muhammad Ali delivered three knockout blows early on as Hayling were left reeling on 26-4.

After opener Rob Cells was run out for a duck without facing a ball, Ali dismissed Hallett (13), Ryan Atkins (8) and Freddie Steele - the latter out first ball.

Gary Martin (60 off 78 balls) offered stern resistance, and No 8 Chaplin struck an unbeaten 28.

Mani Noor-Spencer (2-26) and Manny Ferreira (2-19) ensured Hayling were bowled out for 162 to lose by 90 runs - their second successive league loss.

Kerala are top after recording a second successive win, by 33 runs in a high-scoring game against Emsworth.

The Portsmouth side rattled up 290-9 in their 40 overs and then withstood an Emsworth reply that featured half-centuries for the top three in their order.

Prajun Kallidil struck 65 at the top of the Kerala order with good efforts later on from Presh Prasad (49) and Nimal Valsan (44). Ant Norris (3-36) was Emsworth’s most successful wicket-taker, but there were 25 wides in a 45-haul of extras.

Lewis Roberts began Emsworth’s reply at a furious pace, hitting 11 fours in a 27-ball 52 before he was first out at 66-1.

Fellow opener Lee Gray reached 50 off 36 balls before he was stumped by Kallidil off the bowling of Valsan (3-43).

Barrie James kept up with the run rate by blasting 75 as Emsworth reached 197-3.

They closed on 257-9.
