City athletes shine bright

Classy performances from City of Portsmouth juniors lit up the Hampshire Schools’ Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

In the junior girls race, Josie Czura recorded a dominant victory.

Her time of 9min 37sec gave her a 48-second winning margin.

Czura’s Gosport & Fareham team-mate Cheyenne James finished seventh (10.52) to help seal second place in the team race.

Other scorers for Gosport were Poppy Wright (12th in 11.00), Laura Irvine (13th in 11.02), Eleanor Purdue (16th in 11.07 and Grace Kelly (21st in 11.17).

City’s Anya Pigden finished 10th for South-East Hants (10.58) and Bo Sansom was 14th for Eastleigh & Winchester (11.03).

Meanwhile, Lachlan Wellington was in superb form in the junior boys’ race.

He finished second with a time of 11.11 – just seven seconds behind England international Zakariya Mahamed.

Jacob O’Hara secured an excellent fourth place for South-East Hants (11.42).

Harry Moore was ninth for Portsmouth Schools in 12.16.

His team-mate Joshua Goldfinch finished 12th for Portsmouth (12.20).

Callum Crook was 13th for Gosport & Fareham (12.21).

In the senior boys’ race, Matt Smith was fifth for South-East Hants (19.15).

Toby Roe took 12th spot in the inter boys’ event for Gosport & Fareham (16.05).

Dominic Johnson was 15th for Portsmouth in 16.21, while Ted Yeates was 17th for South-East Hants (16.33).

In the inter girls’ race, Elizabeth Rose finished third for South-East Hants (12.55).

Maisie Grice was fourth (13.00), while Elizabeth Hedley was sixth (13.15).

Gosport & Fareham’s Bobbie Davies finished 20th (14.30) and Louise Lockyer was 26th (14.41).
