Karen Price led the charge with her first podium of the year as the Pedal 2 Pedal team put in some fine performances at the impressive Bontrager 24:12 race at Newnham Park, in Plymouth.
Paul Kelsall, Fred Price and Seb Price also lined up for the Petersfield club in the action-packed event, with multiple mountain bike endurance races taking place on the same course.
Karen competed in the 12-hour solo Torchbearer race with a midnight start.
It was a gruelling event with bad weather in the final few hours making conditions extremely challenging.
Pedal 2 Pedal owner Hannah Attenburrow revealed Karen had to overcome some bad luck at the start and then had to really dig in when torrential rain flooded the course.
She said: ‘Karen had bit of a disaster on the first lap – puncturing on the first slate climb.
This was enough to see Karen finish in a well-earned third place – a brilliant result in some of the worst conditions to race inHannah Attenburrow
‘After mending the puncture she worked hard to chase down the rest of the field.
‘Conditions were still good and the track was running well.
‘Karen rode consistently up to around 4am, when the rain started and her lap times started to creep up. By 5am the rain was torrential and the course resembled a river in places.
‘At around 9am, Karen was extremely cold and had incurred a wrist injury that affected her braking.
‘So after a solid nine-hour’s riding, Karen climbed off her bike and into bed for some sleep. A great effort.
‘This was enough to see Karen finish in a well-earned third place – a brilliant result in some of the worst conditions to race in.’
Seven-year-old Fred had earlier finished seventh (fifth boy) in the 12-minute, seven to 12-year-old race.
He started well and finished strongly in a field of more than 40 children.
Attenburrow said: ‘Fred got a great start and hit the first bend in third place.
‘He was then passed by a few much older kids on the next straight but rode smoothly and stretched out a good gap over the chasing field.
‘A few small bomb holes kept things interesting.
‘And soon Fred was lapping slower riders, having to carefully time his passes to avoid the bottleneck spots.
‘Keeping his speed up, Fred finished in seventh place.’
After picking up his medal, Fred made a well-deserved trip to the trackside ice-cream van.
Meanwhile, in the men’s pairs’ race, starting at midday, Kelsall and Seb Price finished in 13th place – impressive after limited preparations.
Attenburrow said: ‘Seb and Paul finished just before midnight in 13th place – a good result as neither have had much bike time this year.
‘Many thanks to Martyn Salt (organiser) and his team for hosting another fantastic Bontrager 24:12.’
