Defeat for Hampshire in opening match against Glamorgan

Hampshire suffered defeat in their opening match of the season, going down 23-16 to Glamorgan.

The Welsh outfit took an early lead in the ladies' B team match, moving into a 3-1 lead with only Sue Lowther mustering any early resistance.

But Dawn Simmonds and Maria Agozzino pulled sets back for Hampshire to secure a 3-3 draw.

The visitors also seized the advantage in the men's second-string game by going 2-0 up.

Dave Coffin got Hampshire off the mark, only for Glamorgan to move 4-1 ahead.

Steve Musson then doubled Hampshire's tally, before the visitors took the next two sets to go within one win of winning the men's B game.

Hampshire kept themselves in the game with Mick Savvery and Linton Hickman on the mark.

However, Glamorgan won the penultimate tie.

Dave Bonnett triumphed in the final set to end the game 7-5, meaning Hampshire trailed 10-8 going into the second day.

The hosts started day two on the front foot, with Abi Jurd, Jane Monaghan and Tracy North giving them a 3-0 lead.

Glamorgan pulled a set back, before Joanne Senior made it 4-1 to Hampshire.

The visitors won the last set to end the ladies' match 4-2, making things all-square overall.

Andy Mitchell won the opener for Hampshire in the men's A match, before Glamorgan took a 3-1 lead.

Hampshire then pulled level through Chas Barstow and Mike Symes.

But momentum swung to Glamorgan who rattled off three on the trot to go 6-3 up and just one set from winning the whole match.

Gary Stafford took the next set to keep Hampshire's hopes alive, but it was to no avail as the remaining ties went to Glamorgan who earned the three bonus points on offer for the match.
