Duke on the money as Taxpayer crash again

DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE A beat Graham Arms B 5-4 to close in on the promotion places in division B of the Portsmouth Men’s Winter League.

Robbie Blake and John Elverson gave Duke a 2-0 lead before Terry Griffiths and Marc Ricketts restored parity for Graham.

Duke regained the lead through Norman Hollis but a win from Tony Dyer made it 3-3.

Trevor Clements and Paul Simmonds then sealed victory for Duke, before Graham’s Lester Miles took the last leg as a consolation.

Mother Shipton pulled themselves out of division C’s relegation zone with a 5-4 win over Jolly Taxpayer A.

Trevor Davis opened proceedings for Taxpayer but Shipton were soon ahead, with Pat O’Shea, Ben Watson and Colin Dollery on the mark.

A walkover for Mark Harris reduced Taxpayer’s deficit and Robert Houghton and Steve Houghton then put them 4-3 up.

However, Les Shipp and Mark Lyons took the remaining ties to give Shipton the match.

Old Canal B saw off Baffins 5-4 in division D.

Canal drew first blood through David A Hatherley but Vic Wain levelled straightaway for Baffins.

Malcolm Smith, David Mortimer and Steve Bowden put Canal within a leg of victory.

And although Fred Fuggle and Ian Bates kept Baffins in the match, Canal’s Philip Smith bagged the points with the penultimate leg.

Dale Stockwell won the last tie for Baffins.

Newcome Arms B’s hopes of promotion from division E were dealt a blow.

They suffered a 6-3 defeat at the hands of Barley Mow.

Mow took a 3-1 lead courtesy of Ronald Farmer snr, Andy Lawson and Fred Stevens.

Tony Price found some early resistance for Newcome.

Scott Lees reduced Newcome’s deficit to one.

But it was to no avail as Rae Lawson and Ronald Farmer jnr completed the triumph for Mow, leaving team-mate George Watson to claim a walkover and Steve Wilkinson to take a third leg for Newcome.

Rose in June B climbed off the bottom of division A with a 6-3 victory over fellow relegation-battlers Graham Arms B.

Graham took a 2-0 lead through Mark Mihell and Kevin Gilchrist before Shane Williams fired in an 18-dart leg and 147 game-shot to get Rose off the mark.

Mark Morgan had a walkover for Graham but Steve Hakin – 180 and 18-dart leg – Neil Sheppard – 180 – Ian Carter, Mark Brooks snr and Paul Taylor collected five sets on the trot for Rose.

Sam Head (Admiral Drake B) threw a 13-dart leg, while Shaun O’Donovan (Froddington B) and Gary Stafford (Admiral Drake B) recorded 14 and 15-dart legs respectively.

Bob Crawley (Phoenix Lounge) had a 16-dart effort and a 100 check-out, while Steve Musson hit a 17-darter and 180.

Jamie Stewart (Phoenix Lounge) fired in a pair of 18-darters.

And John Colbourne, David Smith (both Shearer Arms B), Liam Jafkins (Froddington Arms B), Dave Kattenhorn (Brewers Arms), Dan Eade (Phoenix Public Bar B), Jon Bramble (Admiral Drake B) and Dean Jones (Newcome Arms A) all hit 18-dart legs, with Smith, Bramble and Jones also scoring 180.

Brendan Woodward (Duke of Devonshire A) hit a 129 finish, Jason Crawley (Phoenix Lounge) checked-out on 120 and Sam Rooney (Admiral Drake B) had a 107 game-shot.

Mason Riou (Brewers Arms) fired in a 109 finish and Lee Squibb (Old House at Home), Colin McKean (Shearer Arms B) and Ricky Williams (Phoenix Lounge) all scored maximums.
