Double blow for Stag in Portsmouth League

World number one Michael van Gerwen has earmarked Portsmouth Guildhall’s popular Untouchables event in December as a key part of his quest to win a second World Championship title.

The Dutchman, who won the sport’s top prize in 2014 but lost his crown to Gary Anderson in January, will appear at the djshop.co.uk 2015 Untouchables on Saturday December 12 – and said he’s in it to win it.

‘I have played in this event a few times now and it is becoming very important to me,’ said the 26-year-old.

‘It comes just before the World Championship and is a great guide for where I am with my form.

‘Winning a tournament like this, with such a strong line-up of players, would give me a massive amount of confidence to take to Alexandra Palace.

‘I always really enjoy the event. It is usually a packed crowd at a great venue and the people of Portsmouth are big darts fans and know how to have fun.

‘I think being just before Christmas helps as spirits are high and all the crowd just want to have a great night.

‘My job is to entertain them but my mind is on one thing – winning.’

Van Gerwen will be joined by Australia’s Simon Whitlock, who lives in Waterlooville, eight-time major title-winner James Wade, former world champion Stephen Bunting and fellow Premier League star Peter Wright.

Dutch duo Vincent van der Voort and Co Stompe, 2014 world youth champion Keegan Brown, Cosham hero Andy Jenkins and darts legend Bobby George will also be on show.

Tickets are available from The Guildhall (at portsmouth guildhall.org.uk or on 0844 847 2362) or via promoters MODUS darts (at dartshop.tv or on 08450 180180).
