Having settled in Waterlooville, Australia’s best darts player, Simon Whitlock, is aiming to win Portsmouth’s annual Untouchables event for the first time.
The world number 13 has appeared in the tournament before but is yet to taste success on his doorstep, with the previous five crowns being shared between world-title winners Michael van Gerwen, Raymond van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis.
Whitlock, who was a 2008 world championship finallist, will again take part in the djshop.co.uk 2015 Untouchables on Saturday, December 12, at the Guildhall alongside world number one van Gerwen and many of the sport’s biggest stars.
And the former European champion told The News that he has his eyes on the Portsmouth prize.
‘I’m really up for the event this year at the Guildhall,’ said Whitlock, whose nickname is The Wizard.
‘I really want to win because the city of Portsmouth has been good to me since I came here.
‘I have played in local competitions, made many, many new friends and I want to win this tournament in where I now consider to be home.
‘My form is steadily improving and I’m sure it will be peaking around that time of the year.’
Whitlock will be joined by eight-time major title winner James Wade, former world champion Stephen Bunting, former world finalist Peter Wright and Dutch ace van Gerwen.
Also on show on what promises to be another excellent evening of sporting entertainment and festive fun – perfect for Christmas parties – are Dutch duo Vincent van der Voort and Co Stompe, 2014 world youth champion Keegan Brown, local hero Andy Jenkins – from Cosham – and darts legend Bobby George.
