Duathlon series regulars start with podium spots

PIOTR MELLER and Neil Collins got their Portsmouth Duathlon Series campaigns off to a flying start with podium spots.

It was the opening race of three on Sunday and the weather was glorious, although a little on the warm side for the competitors.

Organiser Rob Piggott was pleased with the first race.

He said: ‘What a great day to start the season.

‘Well done to everybody who took part and supported.

‘True ambassadors for the sport. See you again at the end of April.’

Newcomer Ben Terry managed to launch a decisive move on the seafront in the third leg of the race.

His time of 18min 11sec for the second 5k run proved decisive.

Overall his winning time was 1hr 00min 28sec for the seafront course of including a 5k run, 15k bike and finishing with another 5k run.

Meller showed his winter training has been good.

His overall time was 1.01.02. He flew around the bike leg with a time of 23min 31sec.

That put him in the lead but Terry chased back on the final run.

Great Britain age-group triathlon international Collins finished in third place with an overall time of 1.01.51.

Both Meller and Collins represent Portsmouth Triathletes.

Sam Aplin finished first lady on Saturday with a time of 1.08.40.

Portsmouth Triathletes racer Kelly Stokes had a good morning as she finished second in 1.11.43.

Defending duathlon series champion Emma Jolley took third place with a time of 1.12.28.

Portsmouth Duathlon Series race two takes place on Sunday, April 30 at 8am.

It’s a 7.5k run, an 18.5k cycle leg and then a 5k run to finish.
