Fareham lifter earns medal and breaks British record in Barcelona

An impressive performance saw Jo MacManus secure a bronze medal and a new British record in the World Masters Olympic Weightlifting competition.

The Fareham Barbell Club member took her place on the podium after a really strong performance in Barcelona.

She was competing in the women's age 50 to 54 category and also broke the British record in the clean and jerk with her penultimate lift.

The gold was won by Germany's Annett Damme with USA lifter Shari Ruelas taking the silver.

It was a hard-fought category with 11 athletes competing and representation from nations including Portugal, Canada, Italy and Germany.

Club head coach Przemek Borak also made the trip. 

The duo set up the weightlifting club in March and have already seen success at national and international level. It is located within CrossFit Fareham and welcomes lifters of all ages and abilities.

MacManus' excellent achievement follows on from great work by Lou Herron and Cheryl Williams who performed well in the European Masters event hosted in Budapest.
