First Jingle Jog proves a big success

The first Jingle Jog fun run took place at Staunton Country Park in Havant yesterday.

Around 120 participants were dressed as Father Christmas elves, reindeers and one as a full Christmas dinner.

The event was in aid of charity Step by Step, which works alongside young people facing homelessness and other difficulties.

Eve Silk, event co-ordinator for Step by Step, said: ‘We have local centres in Havant, Gosport and Fareham so we wanted to organise an event that would reach out you the young people in the local community.

‘It helps raise awareness of the work that we do and grow the support that we receive.

‘We’re happy with the turnout with it being our first year and we’re looking to raise £1,500.’

From its Havant base, Step by Step offers accommodation to 32 young people, including 17 young families.

It helps them develop their knowledge and life skills, enabling them to remain in education or gain employment, so they can maintain their own secure accommodation in the future.

Head of fundraising Jessica Oliver said that Step By Step have had to provide more services to young people in recent months.

‘Due to cuts, I’d say that we have been asked to give support for more young people,’ she said.

‘From the people who we work with, 85 per cent of them either go into education and employment. We help them whilst their young enough to grow their confidence.

‘We show them they are capable and can contribute to the community – its about raising their self esteem.’
