Appy praises Pompey's penalty class

Michael Appleton paid tribute to Pompey's spot-kick quality which made the difference against Bournemouth.

The Blues went through 4-3 on penalties against the Cherries after the game finished 2-2 after 90 minutes at Fratton Park.

Brian Howard, Liam Walker, Ashley Harris and Luke Rodgers all delivered text book penalties.

Mikkel Andersen saved from Southampton loanee Lee Barnard before Marc Pugh skied his effort to see Appleton’s side through.

That made it the first win of the season for the Blues ahead of the league trip to Crawley on Sunday.

Appleton said: ‘It’s great to get our first win on the board.

‘We don’t practice penalties but the guys finished theirs really well.

Bournemouth will be disappointed they didn’t take their chances.

‘Then again, we played 10 times better than that against them on the opening day of the season and had a draw.’
