Bone Idle Gossip: Pile in and join the Portsmouth pylon debate

I thought maybe it was just me being a sentimental old fool about what became the rather long-and-drawn-out removal of Fratton Park’s floodlight pylons.

But that trusty gauge of public opinion, Twitter, has told me I’m not alone.

After @pfc_harry tweeted a picture of the south-east pylon becoming the last to be removed from its corner of the ground last Friday, one response was along the lines of ‘So what?’ and I weighed in to stress that to some, it was a sad day as another part of Fratton as we know it (or knew it) was lost.

Did anyone else care? Yes, quite a few as it happened.

Steve Oliver: ‘My sons (grown up now) used to get so excited as soon as they saw the floodlights as we drove along the A3 and M27.’

Pfc Harry himself added: ‘Even though life goes on we must always remember the things that make matchdays special.’

Tom (@sprints4signs) said: ‘I loved seeing them from about Slindon when on the South Downs on a nice sunny clear day.’

Adam Goldring said: ‘I just enjoyed getting closer to Portsmouth and seeing the lights and singing “my eyes have seen the glories of the lights of Fratton Park” regardless of who was in the car.’

Pompey80s added: ‘Part of my childhood gone. I think Pompey were unbeaten in midweek evening floodlit league games at home for about seven years during the 80s.’

Laurie Jones stated: ‘I just think a little soul of evening games has now gone.’

Karen Cobbold said: ‘I knew I was home once I could see the floodlights – a bit of a sad day.’

I’m sure there are plenty of people who don’t see the pylons’ loss as significant.

Me? I'm just happy I'm not alone in my own view.
