Bone Idol Gossip: Fortnight is a long time in football

It’s bad enough when there are two weeks between rounds of Premier League and Championship games.

It goes on forever, but at least a few previous regimes at Fratton Park were thoughtful enough to get us out of those top two divisions so that we now have the Super Blues in action during a break for England games and such like. But now, we are in the middle of a Pompey-less fortnight and it’s agony.

I think this first week of the drought has been the worst. No Saturday action to build towards, and this column being promoted to the website!

At least in the week to come, we can start to get worked up about Pompey’s trip to Cleethorpes.

Things could be worse.

Can you imagine if certain people in authority in football get their way and force through the dreaded mid-season winter break?

You think a fortnight between games goes slowly – imagine how you’d feel if next week’s game was our last until January 14.

There are those who think a month off in the height of winter would be good for football. Well it might be for footballers, but it would be hell for fans.

We’d have about four consecutive Saturdays during the season when we’d either have to go shopping, indulge in some DIY or go and watch another sport.

Then, of course, the Great British weather being the Great British weather, it would probably snow for the three weeks immediately following the break.

Like another first-round Pompey FA Cup exit, let’s just hope it doesn’t happen.
