Boss stays defiant in Pompey's fight for survival

Michael Appleton insisted he has not been defeated as the club's battle to stay alive intensifies.

And the Pompey boss promised he is keeping the faith his side can turn the corner as the Blues fight for survival.

Appleton’s resolve has again been tested in recent days, after having promises broken over transfer budgets by Portpin.

They yesterday followed that up by pulling out of their bid to take the club out of administration.

That leaves the Pompey Supporters’ Trust as the only offer on the table.

Recent events have raised the question – how many more blows Appleton can take before walking away?

He promised he believes there will be a turning point for the club’s fortunes, though.

Appleton said: ‘There are certain people who take two or three days to come out of a situation, whether it be being angry or frustrated or whatever.

‘I take an hour or two and then I’m alright again.

‘I suppose that’s a trait that works for me at the minute.

‘There have been loads of times when I’ve thought I’ve got my head around the situation – and then there’s another bonfire to put out to turn the corner.

‘I’m not getting too carried away. I’ve not had that much in the way of good news or good information in the last nine months.

‘But I keep telling myself there has to be something definitive which changes the fortunes of the football club.

‘I have to protect myself because I find myself in a position that is very difficult – and has been for a long time.

‘But I believe good things come to good people, and if you work hard enough you’ll get out of it.’
