Carter: We should have taken the Hawks to penalties

The two teams had fought out a goalless affair, with no sign of a breakthrough deep into stoppage-time.

But Carter was convinced the goal shouldn't have counted.

'My players reckon their striker was at least two to three yards offside,' said Carter.

'I thought the officials were poor for both teams all night.

'That's football, I suppose.

'I was proud of the performance we put in and our game plan almost paid off.

'We knew they would have a lot of possession and sat back to soak it up.

'Their front pair didn't get much of a look in all night.

'The experience of Brett Poate and Sam Pearce at the back proved dividends for us.

'At the other end we also had a couple of good chances ourselves.

'Their goalkeeper pulled off a particularly good save from George Sheath.'

The right-sided midfield player showed enough on his debut at Westleigh Park to suggest he will be a good asset.

And Carter felt the Moneyfields' display against their National League hosts offered lots of encouragement.

He is also happy with the grit and determination shown in recent away games.

'˜I felt we stood up to the Hawks and limited their chances,' added Carter.

'As a team we are proving resilient and hard to beat.

'We have also come away with points from two tough away games at Cirencester and Yate Town.

'In a tough start we have played against a lot of the top sides in our league.'

Moneyfields face a difficult opening to their FA Trophy campaign next Saturday when they travel to fellow Southern League Division One opponents Evesham United.
