Chaplin deal praised by Crawford
Pompey's decision to reward Conor Chaplin with a contract extension has been praised by former Fratton Park favourite Ray Crawford.
The Blues today announced they had secured the striker’s services until the summer of 2019, after some standout performances this season.
The Pompey Academy product has started the past five games for Paul Cook’s side and scored notable goals against Wycombe, Barnet and Blackpool in September.
His form continues the precedent set last term, which saw the youngster notch 11 goals in 38 games during his maiden full season with the first team.
Crawford trod a similar path with the Blues, after serving his apprenticeship at Fratton Park before stepping up to the senior set-up.
He believes Chaplin’s new deal is good business for both parties.
‘It’s brilliant news for Conor and it’s good to see the club recognise what a talent he is,’ said Crawford.
‘He’s a goalscorer and every club wants and needs a goalscorer. It’s nice to see Pompey tying him down.
‘I rate him very highly. I played with a lot of good strikers during my day and he puts me in mind of Jimmy Greaves.
‘He was a natural finisher like Conor, too, and it’s always good to see young lads come through the system and be able to compare them to some of the top-line players that have gone before them.
‘Conor’s a top-notch player and you see all the scouts from other clubs watching him, taking notes.
‘I’m so pleased for the lad and for Pompey.’
