Conor Chaplin nets double as Pompey progress

Conor Chaplin struck twice as Pompey beat Southend 2-1 to progress in the Premier League Cup.

The young striker shone for Ian Foster’s side at Westleigh Park.

He fired a goal in each half.

Foster employed a 4-1-4-1 system, with Chaplin leading the line in front of watching Pompey boss Paul Cook and a crowd of 240.

Ben Close was named as skipper.

Gareth Evans lined up on the right-hand side of midfield, one of the three over-23 year-olds along with Amine Linganzi and Adam Buxton.

Liam O’Brien started in goal for his maiden Pompey appearance at any level since leaving the club in 2010, while there was also an outing for Ben Tollitt.
