Cook’s side were again undone by giving away a poor goal from a position of control against the Magpies.

He said: ‘I thought we were excellent in the first half.

‘We created a lot of chances and looked a threat.

‘These goals we are conceding are disappointing, though, when we are not under any pressure.

‘From there the second half became a bit of a joke. It never got going.

‘You have to give Notts County credit because we never got any fluidity going.

‘When games go that way we usually come off second best.’

Pompey felt referee Miller got a number of decisions wrong - and missed a foul on Tom Davies in the build-up to Notts County’s second.

Cook said: ‘Some of the refereeing decisions were mind-blowing.’

Pompey also picked up injuries to Enda Stevens and Gareth Evans on a day to forget.

Cook added: ‘That wasn’t the reason we lost. We lost because we weren’t good enough to win the game.’
