The 25-year-old was the Blues’ most impressive performer in midweek against Exeter, irrespective of the result.

The match saw Pompey’s nine-game unbeaten league start to the season ended in a 2-1 loss to Paul Tisdale’s side.

Yet Cook labelled Bennett’s display as his finest since joining the club in the summer from Doncaster Rovers.

The winger’s bright showing picked up where he left off at Bristol Rovers, when his cross created Gareth Evans’ opener.

Some Blues followers are still to be won over by Bennett, demonstrating a game of opinions.

However, Cook is convinced the player is starting to add consistency to his attacking capabilities.

He said: ‘Kyle was excellent against Exeter, that was as good a performance as you will see.

‘It was his best performance by a long chalk, I think everyone has seen glimpses of what the lad is all about.

‘He was everything that we thought he would be and that just shows you what finding your feet can do, we need more performances like that.

‘He also played well last Saturday and is starting to find his feet, which is good for us.

‘I thought he was absolutely excellent in the week – on another night he shouldn’t be on a losing team. He was one of the big pluses.’

Bennett has been an automatic choice for Cook so far this term, making 12 appearances – all of them starts.

He netted twice against Dagenham & Redbridge on his league debut for the Blues but has failed to hit the back of the net since.
