Coronavirus: Hawks to have fixture postponements as National League suspend matches

The Hawks will not be in action again until April 4 at the earliest after the National League suspended all matches following the coronavirus pandemic.

The league have acted on the back of a government update on the Covid-19 outbreak and taken action to stop all fixtures until next month at least.

Initially, the National League did not follow both the Premier League and EFL boards decision to suspend all matches until April 4 last week.

There were 23 matches that went ahead across the three National League divisions over the weekend – including the Hawks’ 2-1 win at Dorking Wanderers.

However, following the latest advice not to support sporting events with emergency services workers, the league see it as ‘not practical’ to fulfil matches for the time being.

It means the Hawks’ home league meetings with Dartford (March 21) and Billericay (March 28) will not go ahead as planned.

Paul Doswell’s side could return to action on April 4 when they are due to travel to Bath City – but that would subject to a National League update as to when and if the suspension might be lifted.

The Hawks boss feared this decision would be reached in the wake of his side’s late, late victory at Dorking.

‘I don’t think the league will continue,’ said Doswell.

‘I am assuming that we won’t play again.

‘I would not want that to happen, even if we were third from bottom.

‘These are unheard of circumstances not experienced in any of our lifetimes.

‘It is a difficult situation to work out.

‘We are walking into a storm at the moment and things are going to get worse.

‘Predictions are that it could be the end of April before we see things getting better.

‘It is hard to get our head around it.

‘Will the season finish or will it be declared null and void?

‘Extending the season will be difficult.’
