Defender: I would love a Pompey return

The 34-year-old is desperate to return to Fratton Park after a successful spell on the south coast at the back end of last season.

Sodje has revealed initial talks over a permanent switch were held with manager Guy Whittingham earlier this summer.

Yet the former Brentford man is still awaiting a deal to be tabled.

Pompey were back in pre-season training on Monday, still missing Sodje and fellow central-defender Ricardo Rocha.

Both remain firmly in the frame as Whittingham seeks to add one last defensive recruit to his squad.

And while Rocha has still to give his answer following the offer of a contract, Sodje is waiting to find out his Pompey fate.

He said: ‘It’s in the hands of the chairman and the manager to see if we can work something out.

‘I think I have unfinished business and would love to come back.

‘I have a young family and it has to be right for me.

‘But it would be a shame if I cannot go back to Portsmouth, it is what I really want.

‘I have got a few things going on right now, there are other offers.

‘But, ideally, it would be Portsmouth and I have been waiting to see what they have got. I want to be part of that again.

‘It is down to them. They know where I am right now and I have been keeping myself fit.

‘The fans know I play with my heart and the club gave me a chance to get back into football again. I really enjoyed it there.

‘It is up to the chairman and the manager. I would love to come back. I definitely have unfinished business.’

Sodje made nine appearances for the Blues, ending the season in the first team.

He played the final three matches in place of Rocha, who was kept out of contention by a calf problem.

The veteran displayed his trademark battling traits and an uncompromising style in the process, although did receive a red card at Oldham.

Whittingham has already indicated Sodje’s future will largely hinge on whether Rocha opts to return.

Rocha is continuing to mull over another Fratton Park season – a situation Whittingham insists he is comfortable with.

In the meantime, Sodje is adamant he can help Pompey thrive this season – if offered a contract.

He added: ‘This league and English football is about heart and being strong – I know what I can do.

‘I think I have more to offer. I have a reputation and have proven what I can do in the bottom leagues. It can be very tough.

‘I am relaxed about the situation, I believe in myself and put myself under my own pressure to do well. I know I can still play.

‘Hopefully we can work something out.’
