Donohue: I'd love winger to extend Pompey stay

The Scot is currently on a season-long loan from Cardiff City after signing on transfer deadline day last summer.

Kennedy has made a decent impact for Kenny Jackett’s side this campaign.

He’s scored three goals in 29 appearances.

The winger’s current deal at the south Wales outfit expires in June.

It means he will be a free agent if Cardiff opt not to offer him a fresh contract.

Having both signed for the Blues last summer, the former Everton talent and Donohue have formed a close friendship at Fratton Park, spending most days after training together.

And the Welshman wants to see Kennedy extend his stay. Donohue said: ‘He didn’t really know I was at Everton and I didn’t know he was, either, because he was there after me.

‘It was more a case we joined Pompey at a similar time.

‘You tend to speak to each other being the new lads.

‘We’ve just got on from day one. We spend most days together and he’s a good lad.

‘Hopefully, he can also sign here in the summer. I would like him to stay here, definitely.

‘Every time he’s played he has done well.

‘When it comes to playing time you’ve got to concentrate on yourself but I obviously want to see him play.

‘However, there are good wingers here like Jamal Lowe and Gareth Evans, so there’s competition.’

Donohue has delivered a marked improvement in performances in recent months.

He’s reaped the rewards of his extra training sessions with assistant manager Joe Gallen and made the left-back role in Pompey’s starting line-up his own.

Nevertheless, he has two players champing at the bit for his position.

Sylvain Deslandes joined the Blues on loan from Wolves in January but has been restricted to a solitary appearance.

Meanwhile, Brandon Haunstrup has recently returned from injury.

Donohue revealed he is relishing the competition for his left-back berth.

However, he also wanted to improve for his own self-fulfilment.

‘I think competition is good for you,’ the former Chesterfield man added.

‘You know someone is waiting to take your place and you’ve got to be on top of your game every week.

‘For me, it was more fulfilling myself as a player rather than worrying about other people, though.

‘Working with Joe has made me better but I still have a lot of work to put in.

‘When you have two players champing at the bit then it does give you that little extra boost. I’m fortunate to be playing and need to keep my place.’

Having signed last August, Donohue revealed he’s settled down on the south coast – and is looking forward to the summer sun.

‘I like it down here but I think it will be better when it’s the summer,’ he added.

‘I’m settled down and my missus is settled here. We like it.’
