FA’s controversial decision to null and void grassroots game is a ‘kick in the teeth’ for Infinity boss Thompson

Infinity boss Danny Thompson has been left 'gutted' after his side’s chance to make Hampshire Premier League Senior Division history was cruelly ripped away from them.

It comes on the back of the FA's announcement that leagues at step three or below in the English football pyramid will be null and void due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The news will be tough to digest for teams who are fighting at the top end of divisions up and down the country.

None more so than Infinity, who have been dealt a triple blow following the FA's decision.

Not only will the HPL leaders miss out on promotion, the quest to complete an unbeaten campaign has been ended - they had not lost in 24 league matches this term.

Added to that, all the hard work from the club to get a step six ground grading - which was passed last week with a move to AFC Stoneham's old HP Arena home on the horizon - has now gone to waste.

Thompson stressed that should not be forgotten with the club having to wait another season at least to achieve their Wessex League dream.

‘It just feels like a total waste of a season on our behalf,' he said.

‘Everyone has put in so much time and effort, not just on the field but off it as well.

‘To have seen the news that’s come out is a right kick in the teeth.

‘I just feel sorry for the club, chairman, owners and all the players that have put in all the time and effort.

‘It costs money to run football clubs and it just seems like a totally wasted season.

‘To be within six games of being crowned champions. To be within touching distance of - we might have slipped up in the last six games - making history.

‘I don’t think it will ever happen again.

‘It was a special time and I’m gutted to be honest.

‘I’m gutted for the club and the players I’ve managed to get at the club.'
