The former Portsmouth captain, who lifted the FA Cup with the Blues in 2008, has been after a managerial job for some time.

But he has been frustrated in his bid to secure a permanent position with a club.

Now he has been invited to join the England under-21 coaching set-up by manager Aidy Boothroyd. The team play two friendlies in November and are also on the brink of sealing qualification for the European Championships.

It is a chance for the 44-year-old to show what he can offer.

Campbell will link up with them for the two friendly matches.

He said: '˜I've been asked to go and work with Aidy for the friendlies and I've accepted that.

'˜We'll look and see what happens but it's great to be involved.'

Campbell made 115 appearances for the club during Pompey's Premier League years.

He led the club to victory in the 2008 FA Cup final against Cardiff and helped steer Pompey to their highest-ever finish in a Premier League season the same year, as Harry Redknapp's side finished eighth.

The following season the defender skippered Pompey in their maiden venture into European football.
