Foster: Pompey deserved a victory over Wolves

The Blues’ reserves played out a goalless draw at Westleigh Park last night in the Premier League Cup.

Skipper Ben Close came closest to netting, striking the inside of the post in the second half.

However, the sides couldn’t be separated as Foster’s team registered a second successive 0-0 scoreline in the under-23 competition.

But Pompey’s first-team coach was convinced they were worthy of victory over their Championship visitors.

He said: ‘I thought we did enough to win the game. On the balance of play, if any team was going to win it was going to be us.

‘Liam O’Brien had to deal with a shot from distance which has gone into his midriff, but other than that they didn’t really cause us any problems.

‘Whereas we’ve had a couple of chances which flashed wide and the keeper has made a save as well.

‘And Ben hit the post, which I thought was going to go in.

‘So I think on the balance of place we are slightly disappointed we didn’t win the game.

‘Still, the tempo of the game was really high and I was really pleased with our lads at half-time.

‘In the first half we dominated the ball, created one or two chances and looked a constant threat without them really, really hurting us.

‘After the break we possibly lost a little bit of our goal threat, but still dominated the ball.

‘Michael Smith worked tirelessly but we probably didn’t give him enough opportunity to find the back of the net in the second half.’

Pompey’s next match in the competition is Monday, December 5 at Everton in a venue to be announced.
