Fratton faithful set to pen new tunes

The Fratton faithful could be singing from a very different hymn sheet come the visit of Hartlepool on Saturday.

That’s because fans are meeting tomorrow night to create a new array of tunes for Pompey followers to chant.

The event, which takes place in the Victory Bar at 8pm, is the result of a suggestion by supporters keen to add a bit of variation to the atmosphere.

Now Blues supporters are being urged to come out in their numbers to lend a hand at penning some new material for matches.

John Westwood and his band have also agreed to be present in an attempt to coordinate any new songs which emerge.

There will be offers on drinks including Carlsberg, Strongbow, Greene King IPA or a glass of house wine for £2.80 and tea, coffee and soft drinks for £1.

In addition, a comedian has been lined up to provide some entertainment.

And organisers are calling on as many fans as possible to turn up to contribute to the sing song.

A Pompey spokesman said: ‘We can’t sit back and say “what a great atmosphere”, you have to work on it these days.

‘We’re looking for fans to come along, help come up with some really good song ideas and be part of the great Fratton atmosphere. It has been suggested by fans and the club has acted.

‘So now we’re looking for some amusing contributions from people.

‘Every penny people spend on the night goes towards helping the club keep going at present.

‘So we’re urging as many people as possible to come along and help us come up with some more Fratton songs the supporters can sing on match days.’

Fratton Park doors will open at 7pm, although the event will not start until 8pm, with all fans welcome.

Alternately, you can e-mail your new song ideas to [email protected] or via Twitter by contacting pn_neil_allen

These will then be passed on to the club for discussion on the evening.
