Futacs could still have Pompey future

Trevor Birch claims the towering Hungarian has indicated he is still considering staying at the Blues.

Futacs last week missed the club’s self-imposed deadline of committing his future by agreeing to a new deal.

Pompey had offered him a fresh 12-month contract.

However, the terms were reduced compared to what he would have received had the 12-month option in his original deal been activated.

Effectively, it means Futacs is a free agent, although Pompey are due compensation if he leaves because of his age.

Michael Appleton last week told The News he had also given up on the striker remaining at Fratton Park.

Now, following talks, his agent has intimated the 22-year-old could yet pen a deal - if it proves favourable.

And that could leave the door open for Futacs to remain a Pompey player.

Administrator Birch said: ‘I am not sure what the full position is with that.

‘However, I think he (Futacs) still wants a deal.

‘The situation is not cut and dried by any means at the moment and he has not definitely left.

‘He had been offered a contract which is a lower figure so it is about whether he wants to accept it or not.

‘That is down to him.

‘He has not refused it, though.

‘His agent has said he missed the deadline because he didn’t think he really needed to get back in time.

‘But Michael (Appleton) is still talking to his agent so we’ll wait and see on that one.’

Crucially, Futacs may find there is barely any room for negotiation with Pompey committed to cutting down their wage bill.
